Abortion is the artificial termination of a pregnancy. More than 60 million babies are killed by surgical abortion each year around the world. Students often learn about abortion while writing abortion essays. Most abortions are performed by the most traumatic method, curettage (scraping). The medical consequences of abortion are maternal morbidity (often leading to infertility) and mortality. According to the criteria of the World Health Organization, an abortion is an abortion before 22 weeks of pregnancy; an abortion after 22 weeks, when the fetus mass reaches 500 g or more, is called a premature birth. A distinction is made between spontaneous and induced abortion. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is usually divided into early (up to 12 weeks) and late (from 12 weeks), depending on the termination of pregnancy. Its causes may often be hormonal disorders in pregnant women; infectious diseases, including viral; pathological changes in the uterus; kidney, liver, heart disease, etc.Artificial abortion - a distinction is made between medical induced abortion and criminal abortion. Medical induced termination of pregnancy is carried out before 12 weeks by obstetrician-gynaecologist in specialised department of hospital, maternity hospital or antenatal clinic, when the woman wishes to terminate pregnancy and on medical grounds, when maintenance of pregnancy and delivery leads to health deterioration and represents danger to life of woman, or when abnormalities of foetus development are revealed. Termination of pregnancy in excess of 12 weeks is carried out strictly on the basis of the indications set out in the regulations.A criminal abortion is an abortion performed by a woman herself or by another person outside a medical facility. Abortion and women's health Abortion poses a serious threat to a woman's physical and mental health. The high rate of abortions also results in high complication rates. The most frequent ones are: Infectious-inflammatory diseases - occurring in both the early and late post-abortion period in 10-20% of women;Endocrinological complications - occurring at a later stage in 40-70% of womenMenstrual disorders - in 68.5% of cases, followed by endometriosis, uterine myoma, endometrial hyperplasia, polycystic ovaries
